About the HIYIELD project
The project “HIYIELD - Highly Efficient Technologies for Increased Yields in Steelmaking Processes and Reduced Environmental Impact” aims to promote a circular economy by progressively increasing the scrap uptake in three scenarios representing the current European steelmaking routes. KTH, through Björn Glaser, acts as the main coordinator for the project, which kicked off in July 2022.
Objectives
With the ambition to deliver relevant solutions to all steel makers, the project consortium will work to achieve three main objectives:
- To maximize scrap quality by optimal technologies for removal of impurities and optimal use of alloying elements.
- To maximize scrap use by improved scrap identification and classification together with scrap tracking in the circular economy.
- To maximize product quality with further scrap uptake by charge optimization and ensuring the liquid steel analysis and thus the final steel product quality.
Method
The HIYIELD project will contribute to the fight against climate change and the EU steel industry competitiveness by applying highly innovative methods and technologies to the steel sector, such as:
- Deep Learning based Computer Vision for scrap identification and control
- Digital Scrap Information Card for scrap tracking
- Direct Sample analysis

Kunglinga Tekniska Hoegskolan (KTH)
KTH Royal Institute of Technology, through Björn Glaser at the Unit of Processes , Department of Material Science and Engineering acts as the main coordinator for the project.

AEIFOROS Metal Processing AE (AEIF)
AEIFOROS S.A. belongs to the Recycling Segment of VIOHALCO and offers a large range of services in the field of waste management and valorization since 2001, contributing significantly to environmental protection. The company produces high quality recycled products such as slag aggregates for road construction, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, alternative raw materials for the industry. It operates an End of Life Vehicle (ELV) recycling unit including a high tech facility for the processing and valorization of Automative Shredder Residues (ASR or fluff).
German steel manufacturing company with a global presence on the steel production market. Provider of industrial facilities and collaborator together with SHS in Demo Case 2.Specializes in the production of wire rod, hot rolled bars and semi-finished products of various sophisticated grades. With production locations in Völklingen, Burbach and Neunkirchen, Saarstahl AG is one of the most significant manufacturers of long products in the world.
SHS is an operational management holding company in Germany and France with around 14,000 employees and a sales volume of roughly EUR 7 billion. As Germany’s third largest steel producer, its companies produce around 5 million tons of steel that is ready for shipment. SHS actively performs tasks for the two major steel companies in Saarland, Aktien-Gesellschaft der Dillinger Hüttenwerke (Dillinger) and Saarstahl AG.
Theo Steil GMBH Schrott und Metallgrosshandel (STE)
The Steil group of companies consists of several independent companies, the core area of which is the recycling of metallic waste, which is located at Theo Steil GmbH Scrap and Metal Wholesale. Theo Steil GmbH Scrap and Metal Wholesale, headquartered in Trier, has 15 additional branches in Germany and neighboring European countries. The managing partner is Stephan Gondert, who runs the company Theo Steil together with Norbert Schuster.
Voestalpine Bohler Edelstahl GMBH & CO KG (BÖH)

Highly innovative specialists who not only demand high-performance materials, but also need intelligent solutions that expand the limits of what is possible.
The Minkon focus is centred on technically demanding Premium Steelmakers and Foundries to supply them with best product and service both now and in the future. In recognition of the need for continuous investment for the benefit of the future of the industry, they employ a team of highly qualified engineers with access to technical institutions and partners specifically to develop new innovative technologies and product enhancements. Furthermore, they have a high proportion of trained metallurgical and technical specialists working in the field to support our products and the evermore demanding requirements of their customers to deliver continuous process improvements.
Time plan
The project runs between July 2022 and June 2025.
